Well the designs of the characters were generally based on the characters from Mario is Missing.

SpongeBob's color scheme was inspired by both his abrasive side from one of the episodes, as well as PS135's color palette.

The cartoony style is in the Cuphead Show makes the duo look so much better, if they were in the show, then I would be watching the cuphead show
